Governor activity
Gov. Mike DeWine signed an executive order that requires K-12 students who return to school buildings to wear masks. Click here for a link to the signed order.

Governor activity
Gov. Mike DeWine announced that K-12 students who return to school buildings are required to wear masks. The order includes exceptions for students who are unable to remove the mask without assistance, have a facial deformity that causes airway obstruction or have certain behavioral, psychological or developmental conditions, among others. Handling absenteeism during the coronavirus

Absenteeism data could be a key indicator in determining whether remote instruction is effective and where there are gaps, according to an analysis from Phyllis Jordan, editorial director of FutureEd, and Hedy Chang, executive director of Attendance Works.

Communications staff must be part of the decision-making team

How does your district use its communications staff members? Do they have a seat at the table when it comes to district decision-making, or are they on cleanup duty?

Unfortunately, communications specialists in some districts spend far too much time trying to “clean up” after communications fiascos rather than helping to shape the initial thought processes and messaging.

House activity
The House of Representatives passed a motion to select Rep. Robert R. Cupp (R-Lima) as speaker of the House by a vote of 55-38. This followed the motion to vacate the office of speaker by a vote of 91-0 that occurred earlier in the session.

Criminal conviction not a prerequisite for civl liability

OSBA’s legal assistance fund (LAF) supports school districts and political subdivisions that are defending legal challenges with the potential to affect public schools statewide. In one such LAF case, Buddenberg v. Weisdack, Slip Opinion No. 2020-Ohio-3832, the Ohio School Boards Association, Ohio Transit Risk Pool and County Risk Sharing Authority submitted a joint amicus brief on behalf of defendant-petitioners on December 3, 2018.  On July 29, 2020, the Supreme Court of Ohio issued its decision.
