The 2021 OSBA Capital Conference is just a few short weeks away! After months of planning and preparation, OSBA’s staff is eager to welcome everyone in person to the Capital Conference at the Greater Columbus Convention Center from Nov. 7 - 9. If you haven’t registered yet, you can register now!
One feature of Capital Conference for the legal division is the School Law Workshop. We’ve taken steps to make sure that the workshop is packed with valuable content. The school law workshop kicks off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, in Room A 220-225. We’re using a larger room than we have in the past to make sure everyone has plenty of room.
The first session of the day is “Work from home – legal lessons learned,” and will review the top 10 legal takeaways from a year of working at home. Some of the topics covered will be ADA/FMLA eligibility, student attendance and administrative flexibility.
At 9:30 a.m., the spotlight shifts to “Special ed – what the board needs to know.” Among the topics to be covered is knowing when to mediate and when to go to due process and how board members can know if the special education team is recommending the proper approach.
The next session, at 11 a.m., is “Navigating teacher termination laws.” This session is a comprehensive review of how state laws, constitutional requirements, case law, board policies and collective bargaining agreements mesh when it’s time for a board to consider terminating a teacher.
After a quick lunch break, the school law workshop will resume at 1 p.m. with “Let There Be Light! – Ohio Sunshine Laws.” The session will use real world examples to help board members better understand the ins and outs of Ohio’s open meetings and public records acts.
The final session of the day begins at 2:30 p.m. and considers “A School Leader’s Life: Negotiations.” This interactive presentation will demonstrate how board members and administrators can prepare for negotiations and collective bargaining.
OSBA’s division of legal services staff will all be at the school law workshop and we look forward to seeing you there. Please contact us if you have any questions about these offerings or Capital Conference in general.
