As the Legal Ledger reported back in August, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has been working on amendments to its rule on required licenses for substitutes. The amendment process is now complete and the effective date for Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) 3301-23-44 is today — Nov. 2, 2017.
The new rule allows a person with a short-term substitute license to teach in a given classroom for up to 60 days during the current school year. This replaces the former limit of five days. For periods longer than 60 days, an individual with a long-term substitute license must be employed.
