“Crowdfunding” are online fundraisers that help teachers and schools solicit donations of money and supplies to enhance classrooms and enrich the education of their students. Crowdfunding sites are popular with teachers and other well-intentioned individuals seeking to raise funds for their schools. However, the practice can cause significant potential legal issues for schools and district employees.
Toledo City Schools: Giving students a voice

On May 7, I visited a special meeting of the Toledo City Schools Board of Education. It was an important event for the district, featuring a panel of high school students who had an opportunity to speak about their life experiences and what they and their fellow classmates are most concerned about.
On July 2, the Ohio Attorney General’s office (AG) released Opinion No. 2018-016, responding to the question of whether education costs for a child in custody of a public children services agency and placed in a private residential facility outside the state of Ohio is the responsibility of the board of education of the student’s home school district or of another public entity in Ohio.
General Assembly activity
The General Assembly sent the following bills to the governor:
• House Bill (HB) 87, which requires funds that are returned to the state because of a community school enrollment audit to be credited back to certain public school districts;
In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court ruled today that the State of Illinois’ extraction of agency fees from non-consenting public-sector employees violates the First Amendment.
The June issue of Journal, OSBA’s award-winning magazine, features an entire section on hot topics for school districts. The articles, written by six members of the Ohio Council of School Board Attorneys (OCSBA), discuss five topics of critical interest to Ohio school board members and administrators.
