Parents are partners in education

Most teachers and principals recognize the importance of partnerships in building a thriving school. Partnerships with local businesses can provide resources and expertise that enrich student experiences. Partnerships with area colleges can offer opportunities for advanced learning.

But don’t overlook the most important partnership of all: the one with parents.

Celebrate virtual learning

No two schools in America look the same this school year, but one thing they all have in common is that learning looks different than ever before. In fact, many districts are still offering some form of virtual learning.

Department of Labor Final Rule

On Jan. 7, 2021, the Department of Labor (DOL) published its final rules for determining whether a worker is an independent contractor or an employee for purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The rules take effect on Mar. 8, 2021. The rules are important because businesses and organizations must comply with the wage and hour provisions of FLSA for employees but not for independent contractors. Although school districts do not routinely deal with the scenario of questioning whether someone is an employee or independent contractor, it does come up on occasion.

Week of January 18

Governor activity
Gov. Mike DeWine announced the extension of the order that requires all persons to stay at home during specified hours. The signed order is forthcoming.

Presidential inauguration
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris each took the oath of office commencing their terms as president and vice president.

Talking with students about controversial issues

The events at the United States Capitol have created anxiety for many Americans, not the least of which are our children. Our teachers are now tasked with the notion of how to respond to students about the events that occurred.

Governor activity
Gov. Mike DeWine signed into law House Bill (HB) 409. The bill modifies student attendance requirements at certain e-schools; changes education law for the 2020-21 school year to provide school districts continued flexibility and relief during the COVID-19 pandemic; and provides flexibility to school districts regarding educational requirements of substitute teachers for the 2020-21 school year.
