Supreme Court's Decision on Censure

The Supreme Court of the United States recently provided a decision in a First Amendment retaliation claim.  In the case, the board of trustees of the Houston Community College (HCC) censured David Wilson, one of its board members, and barred him from holding officer positions on the board or from receiving travel reimbursements. Wilson alleged that the censure violated his First Amendment right to free speech. The district court ruled against him, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit reversed.

New Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Mask Guidance

Earlier today, the CDC updated its guidance regarding masks and other face coverings. For many counties in the state, CDC is no longer requiring universal indoor masking in public settings, including schools. Although masks are no longer required in certain counties, CDC notes that people should wear them if they have symptoms, a positive test result, or exposure to someone with COVID-19.

State Report Card Changes

The Ohio General Assembly passed House Bill (HB) 82 in June 2021, and it became effective on Sept. 30, 2021. HB 82 revised the state report card system for school districts, beginning with the report card issued for the 2021-2022 school year. However, the overall rating for schools and districts will not begin until the 2022-23 school year.
