Bringing them back: Reengaging students after COVID-19

School absenteeism was a problem before the pandemic and has doubled during the last two disrupted school years. According to a survey conducted by Education Week, an average of 5% of students were absent on a typical day before the pandemic. The estimated number is now 10%, with higher rates of no-shows at the secondary levels.

Governor activity
Gov. Mike DeWine signed into law House Bill 244, which would:
• prohibit public schools from mandating a vaccine that is not fully approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration;

Expiration of Virtual Meetings

As the state of emergency has lifted and life is beginning to get back to normal, public meetings have reverted to pre-pandemic guidelines. For example, the Ohio legislature did not extend or make permanent a public board’s ability to conduct meetings in a virtual landscape.
