Senate activity
The Senate passed Senate Bill (SB) 4, sponsored by Sens. Michael Rulli (D-Salem) and Stephanie Kunze (R-Hilliard), by a vote of 31-0. This bill would add $100 million to the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission budget for eight districts with shovel-ready projects.
Senate Education Committee
The Senate Education Committee held a third hearing on SB 34. This legislation would make changes to the law regarding school employee and educator conduct. There were no witnesses present to testify on the bill.
Sens. Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering) and Andrew Brenner (R-Powell) offered sponsor testimony on SB 102. This legislation would create the Dyslexia Screening Program for public schools.
The committee also heard sponsor testimony on SB 110 from Sen. Nathan Manning (R-North Ridgeville). This bill would make changes to the existing academic distress commission law.
House Ways and Means Committee
The committee heard proponent testimony on HB 76, sponsored by Rep. Derek Merrin (R-Monclova Township). This bill would modify the form of election notices and ballot language for property tax levies.
House Primary and Secondary Education Committee
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria provided an overview of recommendations by the State Board of Education on graduation requirements. Click here to see the recommendations.
House Finance Subcommittee on Primary and Secondary Education
The subcommittee met on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to hear presentations from the Cupp-Patterson workgroup members. They provided testimony on the recommendations of each member of the workgroup. You can find more information on their proposed plan on their website https://sites.google.com/view/ohiofairschoolfunding. Funding simulations were not released at the time of this report, but they will be posted on the workgroups website once they are available. The base-cost handout will be helpful in understanding the simulations once they are released.
