EdChoice vouchers

The conference committee on House Bill (HB) 9 continued with hearings this past week. HB 9 includes the Senate’s plan to address the voucher issue. Members of the committee consist of Don Jones (R-Freeport), who serves as chairman, Reps. Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) and Phillip M. Robinson Jr. (D-Solon) and Sens. Matt Huffman (R-Lima), Bob Peterson (R-Washington Court House) and Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo). Sen. Kristina D. Roegner (R-Hudson) served as a temporary replacement for Huffman.

Senate General Government and Agency Review Committee
The committee held a fifth hearing on Senate Bill (SB) 246, which requires an occupational licensing authority to issue a license or government certification to an applicant who holds a license, government certification or private certification or has satisfactory work experience in another state under certain circumstances.

Senate Health, Human Services and Medicaid Committee
The committee held a second hearing on HB 210, sponsored by Rep. Sara P. Carruthers (R-Hamilton), which requires the screening of child care and preschool employees for tuberculosis and the disclosure of information about public assistance recipients to public health authorities. Also, the committee held a third hearing on SB 126, which authorizes a mental health professional to provide a crisis assessment, without parental consent, to a minor who is or is believed to be suicidal and to make an appropriation to support the employment of social workers or mental or behavioral health professionals at educational service centers.

House Health Committee

The committee held a first hearing on HB 469, sponsored by Reps. Susan Manchester (R-Waynesfield) and Thomas West (D-Canton), which prohibits certain health insurance cost-sharing practices.

House Criminal Justice Committee

The committee held a third hearing on HB 208, which increases the penalty for assault if the victim is acting as a sports official or the assault is committed in retaliation for the victim’s actions as a sports official.
